TeachingTeachers can incorporate digital storytelling as a way to inspire students' creativity. Common core standards have been designed to be relevant to real world idea and practices (Butler, 2013).
Writing activities in the classroom can involve digital narratives that take place in different formats; these formats can "offer meaningful instruction across the curriculum that would engage all of the students in [a teacher's] class" (Butler, 2013). In the article, "The Digital Media Writing Project: Connecting to the Common Core," Anne Butler provides questions that teachers should ask when planning a digital media project:

Cowell (2011). In the article, "iPoetry: Creating Space for New Literacies in the English Curriculum," Curwood and Cowell said that teachers can use new literacies as a way to "enhance students' critical engagement, increase their awareness of audience, and encourage their progressive use of multiple modalities." They also said that these new ways of thinking create participatory, collaborative, and distributed projects for students to share their knowledge. Teachers can bring their own knowledge and skill sets to such literacy projects. They should be familiar with the technology and be able to infuse it with the required standards. Curwood and Cowell said that "classic literary devices, such as mood or imagery, can come alive through sound effects, visual images, and dynamic transitions." In addition, students can learn meaning about audience and purpose in their decision-making process. Curwood and Cowell detailed ways for teachers to enable students' knowledge through digital storytelling:

In the article, Curwood and Cowell discuss research findings on how technology can be incorporated into a poetry unit. _______________________________________________________________ In addition to the above questions that teachers can ask when choosing technology, Jill M. Olthouse and Myriah Tasker Miller have additional criteria for using Web 2.0 tools.
_______________________________________________________________ Another especially relevant website that can be useful for teachers as they acquire technology resources is "Digital Is" through the National Writing Project. The site is a community for teachers to share digital writing ideas, techniques, and resources. This site also has ideas for how specific technology can fit into the classroom. "Digital Is" is described as a resource where "educators are encouraged to share and discuss important evidence of the visionary, innovative, and dedicated work and approaches they bring to the professional practices" (Melendez, 2013). This shows that the site is a place where educators of all levels (beginning and experienced) can congregate to share ideas and learn from one another. Melendez' article, through the US Department of Education, also describes different ways digital learning and writing can connect to the common core standards. __________________________________________________________________ |
LearningStudents are challenged to think about the world around them when they create digital stories. Digital stories are interest-driven and provide different contexts for problem-solving.
With digital stories, students can:
